A carpool works best when everyone treats it like a small shared space. Nobody needs a rulebook, just a handful of habits that show respect for each other's time, comfort and privacy. Here are the dos and don'ts that make the difference between a ride people look forward to and one they quietly avoid.
Be on time, every time
Punctuality is the number one carpool courtesy, because one late person delays everyone else. Treat the posted pickup time as a real commitment.
- Do arrive at the pickup spot a few minutes early.
- Do message your driver in the app chat if you are running behind, as early as you can.
- Do be ready to go: bag packed, phone charged, coffee in hand.
- Don't expect a driver to wait indefinitely. Drivers have schedules too, and a short, agreed waiting window is fair.
- Don't change the pickup spot without checking with the driver first.
Drivers, the same rule applies in reverse. If you cannot make the time you published, tell your riders right away so they can make other plans.
Respect the car
For a driver, the car is personal property, and passengers are guests. A few small gestures go a long way.
- Do ask before eating, drinking, or opening a window.
- Do take your trash with you and keep bags tidy.
- Do buckle up promptly and close doors gently.
- Don't put your feet on the seats or dashboard.
- Don't bring strong-smelling food or heavy perfume without checking that everyone is comfortable.
Drivers can help by keeping the car reasonably clean and by mentioning anything riders should know, such as limited trunk space.
Read the room on conversation, music and calls
Some people love to chat on the way to work. Others treat the commute as quiet time before a busy day. Neither is wrong, and a good carpool leaves room for both.
- Ask early. A simple "Do you mind some music?" or "Are you a chatty or quiet commuter?" settles the matter.
- Keep volume reasonable. If you want to listen to something of your own, use headphones.
- Keep calls short and quiet. Take urgent calls, but avoid long or sensitive conversations in a shared space.
- Avoid hot-button topics. Politics and personal complaints can make a short drive feel long.
Handle money and changes gracefully
Money awkwardness is the quickest way to sour a carpool, and the app removes most of it. Passengers pay the ride price plus a small service fee, and the driver receives the full ride price, so there is nothing to haggle over in the car. If you and your driver have agreed to settle in cash, have the right amount ready and settle up at the start or end of the ride as agreed. You can read the details in how to pay for a carpool ride.
Plans will change. When they do:
- Do cancel as early as possible, instead of simply not showing up.
- Do tell your driver if you have a heavy bag, a stroller, or any special needs in advance.
- Don't bring an extra passenger who is not on the booking without asking the driver first.
- Don't ask a driver to take a significant detour that was not part of the ride.
Respect privacy and safety
Riders and drivers share a small space, but that does not mean sharing everything.
- Do use the in-app chat to coordinate. You do not need to hand out your phone number.
- Do confirm you are in the right car using the ride start code.
- Don't post photos of fellow riders or drivers online without asking.
- Don't pressure anyone to share personal details they would rather keep to themselves.
Drivers should also drive calmly, follow traffic laws, and avoid phone use at the wheel. Riders can help by not distracting the driver at critical moments. For more, see our carpool safety checklist.
Leave a fair rating
Ratings help the whole community. Be honest and kind. If something went wrong, such as a late arrival or a messy car, say so factually. If the ride was great, say that too. A thoughtful review helps the next person decide, and a gentle word in person is often the best way to fix small things.
