Carpool Safety Checklist for Riders and Drivers

A practical carpool safety checklist for riders and drivers: before, during and after the ride, plus the in-app tools that help.

Carpool Safety Checklist for Riders and Drivers

Carpooling means sharing a car with someone you may not know well, so a few safety habits are worth building from the start. None of them are complicated. This checklist covers what to do before, during and after a ride, whether you are the driver or the passenger, and shows how ShareSpace Carpool's built-in tools support each step.

Before you book or publish

Good safety begins before anyone gets in the car.

  • Check the profile. ShareSpace members are verified and go through ID checks. Look at the profile and ratings of the person you are about to ride with or carry.
  • Read the ride details. Confirm the pickup point, drop-off point, time and any stopovers match what you expect.
  • Choose sensible pickup spots. Pick well-lit, public, easy-to-find places rather than isolated ones.
  • Keep communication in the app. In-app chat lets you coordinate without sharing your phone number.
  • Trust your instincts. If a booking or message feels off, you can decline or cancel.

Checklist for riders

When your ride is about to start, run through these quick steps:

  1. Confirm the car and driver. Check the vehicle details in the ride against the car that arrives.
  2. Use the ride start code. The start code confirms you are in the right car with the right person. Do not skip it, even if the car looks familiar.
  3. Share your trip. Use trip sharing so a friend or family member can follow along.
  4. Buckle up. Wear your seatbelt for the whole trip, including short ones.
  5. Sit where you are comfortable. Choose a seat that lets you exit easily, and keep your phone and belongings within reach.
  6. Speak up. If you want the driver to slow down, change the music, or adjust the route, say so politely.

Checklist for drivers

Drivers are responsible for the vehicle and for everyone inside it.

  • Prepare the car. Check tires, lights, fuel and cleanliness before you leave. Make sure each passenger has a working seatbelt.
  • Verify your passenger. Use the ride start code so you know the person getting in is the one who booked.
  • Stay focused. Keep your phone out of your hands while driving, and park safely before you reply to messages.
  • Follow the route. Stick to the published route and stopovers. If you need to change something, tell your passengers in chat first.
  • Know your own limits. If you are tired or unwell, it is better to cancel than to drive.
  • Check your insurance and local rules. Requirements differ by state and by insurer, so check with your own provider and local rules rather than assuming.

During the ride

Most rides are uneventful, which is the goal. A few habits still help.

  • Keep the conversation friendly and respect personal boundaries. See our etiquette guide for more.
  • Pay attention to the route. If the driver goes a different way, ask why.
  • Keep valuables out of sight and do not leave belongings in the car.
  • If anything feels unsafe, ask to be dropped off in a safe, public place.
  • In an emergency, contact local emergency services first.

After the ride

The last steps matter too.

  1. Check you have everything. Phones, bags, and jackets are the most commonly left behind.
  2. Leave a rating. Honest, factual ratings help keep the community trustworthy.
  3. Report problems. If something did not feel right, let the ShareSpace team know through the app so it can be reviewed.
  4. End trip sharing. Let your contact know you have arrived safely.

Safety tools built into the app

ShareSpace is designed to make these habits easier:

  • Verified members and ID checks so you know who you are riding with.
  • Ride start code that confirms you are in the right car.
  • Trip sharing so people you trust can follow your ride.
  • In-app chat so you can coordinate without exchanging phone numbers.
  • Ratings that help the community recognize reliable members.

No tool replaces good judgment, but together they make it simpler to travel with confidence. We explain the verification side in more detail in safety features and verified drivers.
