A good carpool starts with a good match: someone who is going the same way at about the same time. Finding that person can feel like the hard part, especially if you do not know many coworkers or neighbors who commute like you do. ShareSpace Carpool is built around that problem. You enter where you are going and when, and the app shows rides that fit. This guide explains how matching by route and time works in general terms, how to read your results, and what you can do to improve your odds.

How matching works: route and time
Every ride in the app has a pickup point, a drop-off point and a departure time. When you search, you enter your own pickup, drop-off, number of seats and departure time, then tap Search rides. The app then shows rides that line up with what you entered.
Two ideas help explain why a ride appears or does not:
- Route fit. A driver does not have to start and end exactly where you do. If the driver's route passes near your pickup and drop-off, the ride can still work for you. Each result card shows how far you would walk to the pickup and from the drop-off.
- Time fit. The departure time matters because both people need to be ready at the same moment. A ride that leaves close to your preferred time is more useful than one that leaves much earlier or later.
Reading your search results
Each ride card gives you the details you need to compare options quickly: the departure time, the price per seat, the walking distance to pickup and from drop-off, the driver and the number of seats left. You can use the sort chips to order results by earliest, cheapest or closest, depending on what matters most to you today.
Open any ride to see the route, the driver and the vehicle. The total you pay, including the service fee and any tax, is shown above the Confirm button, so there are no surprises. If you are unsure how prices are set, carpool cost sharing explained walks through it with an example.

Book just your stretch
You do not need to ride the whole route. If you only need part of it, you can book that stretch and pay only for it. Drivers can also add stopovers along the way to pick up riders, which means more rides may pass close to where you actually are. If you are a driver, adding sensible stopovers when you offer a ride can make your trip useful to more people without changing your own route much.
Tips for better matches
You cannot control which drivers are on the road, but you can make your search easier to match. Try these steps.
- Search a little earlier than you need. Looking a day or more ahead gives drivers time to publish and gives you more choices.
- Be flexible on time where you can. Shifting your departure time by a few minutes can reveal rides that were just outside your window.
- Be flexible on pickup. A short walk to a more convenient corner may match you with a driver whose route does not pass your exact door.
- Use the sort chips. Sort by closest if walking matters, by earliest if time is tight, or by cheapest if you are comparing options.
- Check seats left. If you are traveling with someone, make sure you search for the right number of seats.
When there is no match yet
Sometimes your search comes back empty. That does not mean carpooling will not work for you. It usually means no driver has published a ride that fits yet. The app gives you two ways forward:
- Request a ride. Tap Request a ride so your need is on record for drivers heading your way.
- Repeat daily as a rider. If you travel the same route every day, set up a daily request so you are matched to rides each day instead of searching again.
If you are also a driver, think about offering your own trip. Others may be looking for exactly your route. The weekly commute planning guide can help you decide which days to carpool and which to skip.
Check before you commit
A match on route and time is only the first step. Before you book, check the driver's rating and verified badge. After booking, use in-app chat to confirm pickup details without sharing your phone number. At pickup, ask the driver for the ride start code, which confirms you are in the right car. Frequently asked questions
Does the driver have to start exactly where I am?
No. Rides can still fit if the route passes near your pickup and drop-off. Each result shows your walking distance to pickup and from drop-off so you can decide.
What if I only need part of a route?
You can book just your stretch and pay only for it. Drivers can also add stopovers, which can help riders joining along the way.
What should I do if I cannot find a match?
Try adjusting your time or pickup point, tap Request a ride, or set up Repeat daily as a rider if you travel the same route often. Matches depend on which drivers are offering rides, so results can vary.
The more clearly you describe where and when you are going, the easier it is to find someone going the same way. Download ShareSpace Carpool, enter your route and see which rides fit your day.
