Getting Started with ShareSpace Carpool: Your First Ride

A step-by-step guide to your first ShareSpace Carpool ride, for riders and drivers, with what to prepare and simple tips for a smooth start.

A person ready to start their day with a backpack

Your first carpool should feel simple, not stressful. ShareSpace Carpool is a free app for iPhone and Android that connects drivers and riders heading the same way and splits the cost of the trip. This guide walks through your first ride from both sides, as a rider booking a seat and as a driver offering one, so you know what to expect before you tap anything.

What to prepare before your first ride

A few minutes of setup makes the first trip easier. Before you open the app, it helps to have these things ready:

  • A phone number or Google account. You can sign in with either one.
  • Your route and timing. Know your pickup, your drop-off and roughly when you need to leave.
  • A way to pay (riders). You can pay with your in-app wallet, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, or hand cash to the driver.
  • Your vehicle details (drivers). You add your vehicle when you offer a ride.

The app is free to download from the App Store and Google Play. You only pay when you book a seat.

How to find your first ride as a rider

Open the app and sign in. On the Home screen, follow these steps:

  1. Enter your pickup, drop-off, number of seats and departure time, then tap Search rides.
  2. Browse the results. Each card shows the departure time, the price per seat, how far you walk to pickup and from drop-off, the driver and the seats left.
  3. Use the sort chips to order the list by earliest, cheapest or closest.
  4. Open a ride to see the route, the driver and the vehicle. The total you pay, including the service fee and tax, appears above the Confirm button.
  5. Choose how you will pay and tap Confirm Ride.

If nothing matches, you can tap Request a ride, or set up a repeat daily ride as a rider so the app keeps looking for matches. You can also ask Riley, the in-app AI assistant, to search for you. For a deeper look at how payment options work, read how to pay for a carpool ride.

How to offer your first ride as a driver

If you are already making a trip, you can share the seats. From Home, tap Offer a ride and then:

  1. Add your pickup, drop-off, departure time and vehicle.
  2. Pick the route that fits you, and add optional stopovers if you want to pick up riders along the way.
  3. Choose how many seats you are offering.
  4. Set a price per seat. The price is capped to the shared cost of the trip, and the app shows you the limit.
  5. Review the summary and tap Publish Ride.

Riders can now find and book your ride. You can chat with them in the app and manage bookings in one place. The full ride price goes to your in-app wallet. If you want to understand where the price limit comes from, see carpool cost sharing explained.

On the day: start code, chat and ratings

Each ride has a start code that confirms the rider is in the right car. As a rider, ask for or share the code at pickup so the trip can begin. Use in-app chat to coordinate the meeting point, and you never need to share your phone number to do it. After the trip, rate the ride. Ratings help other members decide who to travel with.

Before you book, check the driver's rating and verified badge. For more habits worth building, see the carpool safety checklist for riders and drivers.

First-ride tips

  • Arrive a few minutes early. A rushed pickup is the most common source of friction.
  • Confirm the meeting point in chat. A short message avoids guessing which corner or entrance.
  • Tell the other person about delays. A quick note goes a long way.
  • Start with a one-off trip. Try a single ride before setting up a daily routine.
  • Try Riley. Prompts such as "I need a ride to work tomorrow" let you search by typing instead of filling in fields. Riley asks you to confirm before anything is booked or published.

Common first-ride questions to settle early

A little clarity up front prevents most first-ride hiccups. Riders can decide whether to pay with the wallet, a card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or cash before they reach the booking screen. If you choose cash, only the service fee is paid in the app, and you hand the ride price to the driver. Drivers can decide how many seats they are comfortable offering and where they are happy to stop for a pickup.

It also helps to think about luggage and timing. If you carry a large bag, mention it in chat so the driver can plan. If your schedule is tight, choose a ride with a pickup close to where you are and check the walking distance on the result card before you book. Small details like these keep the trip relaxed for everyone.

Finally, remember that a carpool is a shared arrangement. A friendly message, a punctual arrival and a quick rating afterward do more to make the next ride easy than any setting in the app.

If your goal is a regular commute, you can also look at weekly commute planning with carpools once your first trip is done.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to choose between being a rider and a driver?

No. You use the same app for both. You can book a seat on one day and offer a ride on another.

What if I cancel before the ride starts?

If you cancel a paid booking before the ride starts, everything you paid returns to your wallet, and you can use it on another ride.

Can I set up my regular commute once?

Yes. From Home, choose I'm driving or I need rides under the daily commute option and enter your route and time. Drivers' rides are published for them each day, and riders are matched to rides each day. You can edit or stop it from your profile whenever you like.
